

I live in a very very exposed network, with hundreds of apps, most of them ancient, some of them with no modern alternative, and in top of that, the choice is not only what you prefer, 200 bucks for update a perfectly working software, or 200 bucks for LTO tapes, it also has a added layer over us of what we do, 200 dollar for IT or 200 dollar for help a needed family or 200 dollar for police car maintenance.

Your company isn't going to sink because a single piece of ancient software, only if is a targetered attack. I agree with that, but in the real world is not that common, and layers of security minimize risk too.
